HARRISONBURG, Va. - NC State dropped its first non-conference meet of the season on Saturday to the Richmond Spiders. Richmond won the final relay of the evening to clinch the team win and improve to 9-2 on the season, while the Wolfpack falls to 3-6. Three NC State women took individual wins, with freshman Rebecca Perry and sophomore Molly Culberson each taking two apiece. Perry was a winner in the 100 and 200 freestyle events, and set new facility records in both events. Culberson took top honors on the 1- and 3-meter springboards for the second day in a row, and had facility-best marks on both boards.
NC State's 200 medley relay "A" team was disqualified in the opening event of the day, which, consequently, would have been the points the Wolfpack needed to win the meet. Richmond squads finished first and third, while NC State's Rachel Bumgardner, Halle Kiehlmier Liz Herron and Shannon Brewer took second with a time of 1:51.94.
Lindsay Barwegen posted a time of 17:15.34 in the mile, notching her first win in the event of the season. Allison Marks and Claire Nicholls scored in fourth and fifth. Perry's first win of the day came in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.61. Amy Baskwell and Kerry Whitson added points with third- and fourth-place finishes. Melissa Jamerino finished second in the 50 free with a time of 24.51 and Jenny Bland took fifth.
Wolfpack IMers finished second, third and fourth, led by senior Karen Burbella with a time of 4:27.95. Laura Cutler and Jessica Koenig also placed. Culberson's first win of the meet was on the 3-meter board with a season-best mark of 345.05. She led a sweep for the women. Christy Welch was second and Ashley Lamberton took third. Shelbey Kosova's score was good enough for fourth place, but she did not score for the team. The Pack's 200 flyers finished in second, third and tied for fifth. Cutler was the top finisher for NC State in 2:08.31. Burbella was third and Christy Britt added half a point to the team's tally with a tie for fifth.
Perry touched in 51.62 in the 100 free for her second win of the day, and second facility record. Liz Herron scored in fourth. Kendall Smith and Koenig took third and fifth in the 200 back. Barwegen was second in the 500 free. Catherine Parks and Abby Lewis finished fourth and fifth. Culberson's score of 303.20 on the 1-meter board was not only a facility-best mark, but also her best of the season. Welch and Lamberton took second and third. Kosova again finished with a fourth-place mark. Pack breaststrokers finished in the middle of the scoring order for second, third, fourth and fifth in the 200. Burbella finished in 2:22.88, followed by Erin Trau and Kiehlmier. Lola Woodwoth's mark did not score.
NC State held a three-point advantage with only the 400 free relay remaining on the day. Richmond clinched the win with a first-place showing in the event, despite second- and third-place finishes by the Pack's squads.
The Wolfpack will finish its road tour on Monday at 2:00 p.m. when it returns to the Triangle to take on the Duke Blue Devils in Durham.
