Pack Takes Win Versus James Madison, 134-102

HARRISONBURG, Va. - NC State defeated the homestanding James Madison Dukes on Saturday, 134-102, to continue its perfect record in non-conference action. The Pack picked up wins in nine events on the day, led by the record-breaking performance of freshman diver Vitor Assuncao who scored a 381.75 to better his own school record. Peter Pessagno led sweeps in the 500 and 1650 freestyle events for the distance contingent.
NC State's 200 medley relay squad of Andy Bauman, Rob Yeager Rick Scott and Cristian Rojas finished second to open the meet. The Pack followed with a sweep in the mile, led by Pessagno with a time of 16:00.44. Seth Hoffman and Chris Nixon finished two and three. Billy Booth's non-scoring time was good enough for fifth. The Pack also swept the following event. Jack Deal led Rojas and Jorge Gutierrez to the wall with a winning time of 1:42.40 in the 200 free. Cullen Jones continues to impress, this time capturing a win in the 50 free with a time of 20.49. Gutierrez finished fifth.
Yeager took first in the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.53. Kevin Devine finished fourth. Assuncao took first on the 3-meter board with an impressive 359.05. Steve House was second. The Pack's Scott Dettloff won the 200 butterfly, and Rick Scott touched second. Rob Terrell and Dettloff scored second and third in the 100 free. Terrell's 47.14 was the best of the season for the sophomore.
Rojas was a winner in the 200 back in a time of 1:53.61. Bauman finished second and Terrell scored in fourth. Deal led three other Wolfpack swimmers to the wall first in the 500 free. His time of 4:36.90 was his second-best of the season. Hoffman, Nixon and Pessagno finished in succession. Assuncao set a new facility and NC State record on the 1-meter with a 381.75 in six dives. He previously held the record with a score of 363.45, adding nearly 25 points to his best mark. House again finished second.
NC State was assured the win following the diving results, and swam the 200 breaststroke and final relay in exhibition. Yeager had the top time of the 200 breaststroke race with a 2:04.94. The Pack's 200 free relay squad bettered its time with a 1:24.03. Devine, Dettloff, Brian Pursley and Jones. Jones split the final 50 in 19.73.
NC State aims to take two out of three for the weekend when it travels to Durham on Monday for a 2 p.m. meet with the Duke Blue Devils.
