Seminoles Down Pack Men and Women

Tallahassee, Fla - NC State's swimming and diving teams posted a number of solid swims, but were unable to come up with team victories against the Florida State Seminoles in ACC action on Jan. 9. The men's squad won a total of seven events, led by sophomore Cullen Jones in the 50- and 100- freestyle events. Abby Lewis was a winner for the Pack in the 1000-yard freestyle, turning in a life-time best in the event. The men's team is now 5-2, 1-2 in ACC action, and the women are 3-4, 0-4.
Jones, who competed for the first time this season, turned in a a time of 20.42 in the 50 free. Later in the evening, he posted his second victory of the meet with a win in the 100, marking a time of 45.40. Both times should rank in the ACC's top-10 when times are released on Tuesday. Peter Pessagno scored in fifth in the 50, and Jack Deal added points in the 100 free.
Rob Yeager was a winner in the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.32. Kevine Devine Finished third, and Cristian Rojas was fifth. Scott Dettloff finished second in the 200 fly with a time of 1:52.90, Seth Hoffman finished fifth. Robert Terrell continues to shine in the backstroke, this time taking a win in the 200 with a time of 1:51.40. Devine scored in fourth.
Chris Nixon led the NC State contingent in the 1000 free with a third-place finish and time of 9:33.62. Seth Hoffman took fourth and Pessagno finished fifth. Pessagno took fourth in the 500, followed by Nixon in fifth.
Terrell, Yeager, Dettloff and Jones teamed together in the 400 medley relay for a second-place finish in a time of 3:22.54. The Pack team of Deal, Dettloff, Andy Bauman and Terrell was the top scorer in the 400 free relay.
Freshman Diver Vitor Assuncao continues to excel on the boars, sweeping competition on the 1- and 3- meter springboards. His scores of 300.23 and 346.87, respectively, were both winners on the day.
Lewis posted the only win for the Wolfpack, but it was a big one. Her time of 10:17.85 was a lifetime best, and marked her first win of the season. Lindsey Barwegen was strong in the 200 and 500 free events, with second-place finishes in both events. Rebecca Perry and Melissa Jamerino finished two and three in the 50 free. Perry posted a time of 24.01.
Jessica Koenig and Karen Burbella finished four and five in the 200 IM. Burbella added a second-place finish in the 200 fly to her tally, while Catherine Parks took third, and Lewis finished fifth. Pack swimmers were three, four and five in the 100 free, led by Liz Herron in a time of 54.18. Rachel Bumgardner finished fourth and Jamerino took fifth. Kendall Smith was second in the 200 back with a time of 2:06.47. Emily Clabaugh and Koenig were fourth and fifth.
The Pack's 400 free relay squads scored one and two, with Kerry Whitson, Herron, Bumgardner and Perry heading the way in a time of 3:33.48.
Molly Culberson finished second in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events. Christy Welch was fourth in the 1-meter, and fifth in the 3-meter.
The Pack will resume action on January 17 when it travels north to Charlottesville to face the defending ACC Champions.
