NC State Dominates Competition in First Match

FT. BENNING, GA - NC State dominated conference foes Wofford and The Citadel this weekend, posting a school record 1,507 in air rifle to soundly defeat two squads from The Citadel and one from Wofford. Overall, NC State claimed eight of the top-10 individuals. Three freshmen and Ryan Dorety composed the scoring squad, with true freshman Jennifer Marshall toping the team with a 381. Freshman Matthew Gifford fired a 375 and redshirt freshman Kirk Freeman made a strong debut with a 374. The Citadel Co-Ed squad fired a 1,468 as a team with Kacmar posting a match-high 386. The Citadel Women's team finished third with a 1,434, while Wofford finished fourth at 1,042.
The Wolfpack is 3-0 after defeating three teams in the tournament held in Ft. Benning, Ga. Ryan Dorety and Christine Kimball fired personal best scores with 377 and 369, respectively.
"This was a very solid team performance and our team outlook is strong," coach Keith Miller remarked. "Our three freshmen all shot well and showed good poise in their first collegiate match. Even though this set the team air rifle record, all of our shooters are improving daily, so we expect to get even stronger as the year progresses."
The rest of the NC State rifle team dominated the competition as well, with the "Red Pack" (the second group of four), finishing nine points ahead of The Citadel, as well.
Other Wolfpack shooters were John Maroglio (370), Melanie Harris (369), Teri Steinkopff (369), Alexis Davis (354), and Tammy Montgomery (330).
NC State will return to action October 1st in the first SEARC match of the year in Dahlonega, Ga.
