RALEIGH, N.C. - Page Marsh and the women's golf team aren't wasting anytime this season, as the team jumps into play this weekend in two tournaments. Marsh will accompany a team of five to the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C., and assistant coach Dickie Brewer will travel to Salisbury, N.C. with six individuals to the Lady Indian Invitational, hosted by Catawba College.
"This is a great way to start off the season," says Marsh. "I want our team to have as many opportunities to compete in tournament play on the course as possible. We will compete as a team in the Cougar Classic, but will have six players in the Lady Indian Invitational as well."
The Cougar Classic will be played at the Yeamens Hall Golf Club in Hanahan, S.C. Thirty-six holes will be played on Monday with 18 to follow Tuesday.
The Wolfpack lineup will include: Lorraine Ballerano, Molly Birmingham, Courtney Pomeranz, Leslie Stubblefield and Briana Vega. Seniors Pomeranz and Vega were the low team qualifiers and are expected to lead the group.
The field consists of 17 teams, including fellow ACC members Maryland and first-year program Virginia, and four teams ranked in Golfweek's final 2003 poll. The field includes: Appalachian State, Campbelll, Cincinnati, College of Charleston, No. 37 East Carolina, No. 34 Furman, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Miami, Mississippi, Notre Dame, Penn State, Richmond, No. 29 South Florida and Virginia. NC State was ranked No. 39 in the final poll.
"We feel great about our chances in the Cougar Classic," Marsh said. "Our team worked hard individually and made great improvements. Both Molly and Leslie competed in the U.S. Amateur. That experience has really effected their confidence level and we expect them to play well. Bri and Courtney have been playing excellent golf since returning to campus. Lorraine has looked great in practice as well, and she will be right at home in that area. She is from the Myrtle Beach area."
The Cougar Classic will be broadcast on Comcast in the Charleston viewing area, and a simulcast will be available on the official website of the College of Charleston Cougars. Live stats can be found online at Golfstat.com. Yeamans Hall Golf Club was recently ranked as the No. 92 Best Golf Course in the World by Golf Magazine. The course is a Par 72 that will play at 6,026 yards for the tournament. Yemans Hall Club President Peter Ingram said that "Sharing our golf course for what will become a renowned event gives our club and our members an opportunity to give something tangible back to the game that we love so dearly."
The broadcast gets underway on Monday from 10 AM until Noon with coverage of the morning round. The afternoon 18 holes on Monday will be televised from 4 PM until 6 PM with both broadcasts featuring live coverage of the tournament and features. On Tuesday Comcast will cover the final two hours of the tournament from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
Listed on the schedule as a junior varsity event, the Lady Indian Invite will be played Sunday and Monday at the Crescent Golf Club, a par-72 course measuring 5,855 yards.
Players competing will be: Sarah Bonner, Colby Cobb, Sarah Davis, Ashlee Dean, Nancy Mountcastle and Erica Wein.
