RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State wrestling coach Bob Guzzo has made two changes to his coaching staff, promoting assistant coach Carter Jordan to associate head coach and adding former Oklahoma State All-American Jarrod Sanders as a graduate assistant.
Jordan, who joined the wrestling staff for the 1997-98 school year as an administrative assistant and part-time coach, has made a decided mark on the Wolfpack program, especially in the realm of recruiting. Jordan has assembled two national top 10 recruiting classes and has signed three high school or prep national champions, the first three in the program's history.
In the six years Jordan has been on the staff, NC State has produced 18 individual ACC champions and 28 NCAA Tournament qualifiers, and has compiled a 60-44 overall record in dual matches, 21-9 in ACC matches. The Wolfpack has won 18 of its last 23 ACC matches and two of the last three ACC team championships, while finishing first in the conference's regular-season standings twice in the last four years.
Jordan was a walk-on for the Wolfpack from 1983-86 and was a teammate of nine All-Americans and two individual national champions. During Jordan's time on the team, NC State went 58-19 in dual matches, won the 1983 ACC championship, and finished in the top 20 at the NCAA Tournament three times.
"Carter has really added a tremendous amount to our program since he got here," Guzzo said. "He's got great energy and enthusiasm, and he works extremely hard. Our kids have really responded to him since he joined the staff. I'm really happy that we got the opportunity to do this for him. He means a great deal to this program."
Sanders wrestled at Oklahoma State from 1999-2000 through 2002-03 and was an All-American on the Cowboys' 2003 NCAA championship team, taking fourth place at 149 pounds at the '03 NCAA Tournament. Sanders finished his career with a 78-22 record, including a 25-5 mark as a senior. He won 20 or more matches three times, and participated in two NCAA Tournaments. In addition to earning All-America honors as a senior, he missed making All-America by one match in the NCAA Tournament as a junior in 2002.
Sanders has been a standout freestyle wrestler, in addition to his success at the collegiate level. He was a FILA All-American in 1999, and a University Free-Style All-American in 2003.
"Jarrod Sanders was a great college wrestler who brings a world of experience to our program," Guzzo said. "He's experienced all the things that we're striving for here at NC State. He's been an All-American, won a team national championship, and had great success at the national-team level. He's also an outstanding young man, very personable and very hard-working. He's going to be a tremendous asset to this wrestling program."
