GREENSBORO, N.C. (June 17, 2003) - The Atlantic Coast Conference today announced the nine ACC presidents who will make the decision on conference expansion may not formally vote on the matter until late this month.
Wake Forest Athletics Director Ron Wellman, chair of the ACC Athletics Directors, said the ACC is engaged in a thorough, member-driven, strategic planning process designed to ensure the long-term viability of the conference. The priorities of this evaluation have been academic compatibility, commitment to student-athlete welfare, long-term financial stability and national athletic excellence.
When a final vote does take place it will conclude a nearly two year process that began in July 2001 when Georgia Tech Faculty Representative George Nemhauser, then president of the ACC, asked for a thorough study of how the ACC could be best positioned for the future. That study, completed by the conference's Strategic Planning Committee with assistance from outside consultants, resulted in the move to expand conference membership.
