Raleigh,N.C.-Marcus Melvin is looking forward to receiving his NC State diploma. The 6-8 forward is also eager to finish up his college basketball career with classmate Scooter Sherrill. What he isn't interested in doing, however, is making an early entry to the NBA. On Thursday, Melvin decided to put an end to all the speculation about his eminent plans by making it clear that he would indeed return to the Wolfpack for his senior season.
"In response to rumors, I want to make it clear that I will return to NC State for my senior season," Melvin said in a written statement released by the NC State Media Relations Department. "I am really excited about our team and look forward to being a captain next year. I am also determined to pursue my degree."
At the conclusion of NC State's postseason banquet last month, coach Herb Sendek announced that Melvin and Sherrill would be co-captains on the next year's squad. During his junior campaign, Melvin, a Fayetteville native, averaged 12.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest.
One other NC State player, 6-9 center Josh Powell, has announced his intentions of testing the NBA waters, but has reserved the right to pull his name out of the draft after not hiring an agent. As a sophomore this past season, the Riverdale, Georgia native averaged 12.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
