RALEIGH, N.C. - Despite fighting to a number of close points, NC State couldn't handle top-seeded Duke in the first round of the ACC Women's Tennis Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Millbrook Tennis Exchange Center. The Blue Devils took two doubles matches, and clinched the win with three singles points to eliminate the Wolfpack.
Duke's nationally-ranked combination of Granson and Smith took little time to put away the Wolfpack pair of Carmen Torres and Virginia Romero in a quick 8-1 decision. The one and two matches were a lot closer. Loni Worsley and Kristin Lam only mustered three games against No. 10 Kelly McCain and Hillary Adams, but the pair played each point to the fullest before losing, and surrendering the doubles point to the Blue Devils. NC State's Jennifer Jassawalla and Myrna Bawono were leading 7-6 in the number two match when play was discontinued because of Duke's wins at one and three.
Duke's Saras Arasu, Hillary Adams and Katie Blaszak took wins in singles to clinch the match. Arasu moved into the number two match when Duke coach Jamie Ashworth made a late line-up change and pulled All-American Amanda Johnson from the card. Arasu defeated the Wolfpack's Romero in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Danielle Stadelmann lost to Adams in the number five match, 6-3, 6-1, and Bawono fell to Blaszak at number five, 6-1, 6-2.
NC State lost the first set in each match, but was leading in matches one and three when play was called. Lam was up 4-3 in the second against No.3 McCain, and Worsley had a 4-3 advantage in the second against Julie DeRoo.
The Wolfpack finishes its season at 7-12 overall, and with a regular-season conference record of 0-8. Duke advances to face the winner of Friday's Georgia Tech/Virginia match-up in Saturday's semifinals.
Championship action continues Saturday with one of the toughest fields in the nation, as six teams are ranked in the top 50 nationally -- Duke (5), North Carolina (12), Clemson (17), Georgia Tech (23), Virginia (32) and Florida State (49).
