Wolfpack Completes Day One At Raleigh Relays

Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men's and women's track and field squad completed the first day of competition at the 2003 adidas Raleigh Relays Friday at Derr Track. The Wolfpack posted several strong finishes on Friday, a day which consisted of over 120 races among 23 events.
Freshman Jesse Williams took first place in the high jump with a NCAA regional qualifying mark of 6'09.50". In the pole vault for the men, David Kessler recorded NC State's top finish by clearing 16'00.75", a NCAA regional mark, and finishing third. In the same event, Eric Hoverstad was sixth (15'09") and Justin Farmer 18th (15'01"). James Rowell finished 15th in the discus with a top throw of 150'01".
The Wolfpack notched two NCAA regional times in the men's 5,000 meters. David Christian was seventh with a time of 14:20.42, and Nick Mangum took ninth with a time of 14:23.29. Also in that race, Ricky Brookshire was 19th (14:37.34). In the 400 meters, Derrick High was 14th with a time of 48.54, and Monterrio Adams was 37th with his time of 49.49. In the 100 meters, TJ Giwa took 27th (10.86). In the 400 hurdles, Andrew Kerins was 33rd with a time of 55.09, and Jeff Baird ran a 57.68.
Kelly Smoke finished ninth in the shot put with a NCAA regional mark of 45'09", and 10th in the discus with a heave of 147'04". Sheena Dawkins took 14th in the long jump with a top distance of 18'08", and in the high jump, Joann Jackson cleared 5'05" for a 14th place showing.
In the 10,000 meters, it was Kristin Price in third place with a time of 33:27.78, and Beth Fonner was in fifth place running a 34:28.60. In the 5,000 meters, Josianne Lauber was 18th (17:08.26), Renee Gunning placed 20th (17:14.36), and Kara Price was 24th (17:25.32). In the 100 meters, Felicia Fant was 19th (12.18) and Nasheena Quick 38th (12.37).
