The NC State rifle team received top scores from Teri Steinkopff and Joe Upton to lead NC State to a second place finish at the SEARC Championship with a 1,496, 17 points off of conference champion Birmingham-Southern. Steinkopff fired a career-high 381 to finish fourth overall, while Upton finished strong with a 375 to place fifth. NC State placed four shooters in the top-ten individuals to lead all schools.
"Teri has been working very hard lately and doing many good things," Coach Keith Miller remarked. "However, her match scores have hovered in the 360s since November. As often happens in shooting, all of the small things fell into place at once and she bumped up a whole level. I look for Teri to maintain this level for now and improve upon it next year."
Not only did Teri fire a career-best, but it tied for the best air rifle score fired by an NC State shooter this year (Sr. Joe Upton fired an identical 381 at the 1/25 match run by Clemson at Wofford's range in Spartanburg, SC on January 25, 2003).
John Maroglio fired a 372 to finish tied for 7th, while Melanie Harris tied for 10th.
Trey Ragsdale tied for 13th with a 367, while Ryan Dorety finished 16th with a 366. Alexis Davis placed 17th with a 364, Laura Ferrell tied for 21st with a 363, Christine Kimball finished 33rd with a 351, Russell Broadwell shot a 349 to finish 35th, Tammy Montgomery finished 39th, and Anna Whitley finished 42nd to finish the scoring.
Joe Upton finished his senior season with the fourth highest air rifle average in the league.
"If you told me at the start of the year what our scores would be at this point, I would have been pleased overall," Miller said. "To put this (SEARC team championship) numerically, our lowest SEARC team score this year was 13 points higher than our highest league score last year. Also, our final average is higher than the winning team in any of the past years in the SEARC, yet we finished third in the conference. The competition is improving as are we, and we are excited to compete next year."
