Men's Swimming and Diving Falls to Heels

Raleigh, N.C. - The Tar Heels won 12 of 15 events en route to downing the Wolfpack men's swimming and diving team, 155-88. NC State got strong performances all around and took three wins by diver Jared Bench, backstroker Kevin Barkley (200 back) and the 400 Medley Relay team. UNC finishes the season at 9-4 overall and 5-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while NC State falls to 7-4, 3-4 in the ACC.
The Wolfpack opened strong in the 400 Medley Relay , with Steven Cowling taking an early lead with a quick opening leg. Kevin Devine and Rob Yeager paced the second and third legs, and Scott Dettloff finished strong for the win.
Kevin Barkley posted an impressive time of 1:49.81 in the 200 backstroke. Teammates Rob Terrell and Steven Cowling took third and fourth in the event.
Jared Bench was impressive on the boards and posted a season-high score of 330.3 on the 1-meter for the win. He finished fourth on the 1-meter. TJ Ferguson finished second (1-meter) and third (3-meter).
The Wolfpack got other strong performances from John Hudson and Terrell. The two finished three and four in the 200 free. Dettloff and Justin Smith finished two and three in the 50 free. Rob Yeager finished second in the 400 IM and 200 breaststroke.
UNC's Sean Quinn posted a pool record in the 200 breast with a time of 2:00.69. The record was previously broken by the Pack's Yeager (2:01.25) earlier in the season.
The two teams will now prepare for the ACC Championships, which are scheduled to be held at the Koury Natatorium on the campus of UNC. Action is slated for February 27-March 1, with preliminary swims set to begin at 11 a.m. each morning and finals at 7 p.m. each evening.
