NC State in Fifth After Day One of Competition

Chapel Hill, N.C. - NC State placed a number of competitors in the consolation finals and two in the championship to amass a total of 108 points through six events, good for fifth place. Freshman Cullen Jones posted one of the fastest qualifying times of the morning to enter the evening competition as a four-seed. Diver Jared Bench finished fourth on the one-meter board and added important points for the Wolfpack.
Bench put together a score of 292.20 in six dives for his fourth place mark.
Jones, a high school All-American and sectional champion in the 50- and 100- yard freestyle, finished sixth overall with a personal best of 20.35, just missing an NCAA provisional mark by two one-hundredths of a second. Justin Smith finished first in the consolation final for a ninth-place finish with a time of 20.63. Kevin Devine scored for the Pack in16th.
NC State's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Smith, Devine, Jones and Scott Dettloff finished in fourth. Pete Pessagno finished 12th overall in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:28.49. Jack Deal finished first in bonus consolation heat, Chris Nixon third and Dan Kesler fifth.
Steven Cowling and Cristian Rojas scored for the Pack in the 200 IM with 11th- and 14th- place finishes, respectively. Rob Yeager won the bonus consolation heat.
Cowling, Brian Pursley, Dettloff and Jones took sixth in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:18.15, a provisional NCAA qualifying mark.
Action will commence Friday at 11 a.m. with preliminary swims in the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back. Three-meter diving will be held in the afternoon. Finals will begin at 7p.m. Admission is free to the event.
