Chapel Hill, N.C. - NC State fell into seventh place at the 24th Annual Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming & Diving Championships Friday evening with a total score of 161 through 13 events. Virginia stormed into first place, with North Carolina and Maryland jockeying for second.
The Wolfpack's individual medley swimmers Karen Burbella, Jessica Koenig and Laura Cutler each scored in the evening consolation finals, taking 11th, 12th and 15th respectively. Koenig's time of 4:22.31 is an NCAA "B" standard mark, Burbella posted a provisional mark earlier in the season. Both Koenig and Cutler swam personal bests for the season.
Catherine Parks won the "B" heat of the 200-yard freestyle in Friday morning's preliminary swim to qualify for the consolation finals. Parks finished in 14th with a season-best time of 1:53.12. Katie Sheridan finished 22nd.
Two Wolfpack breaststrokers reached the consolation finals of the 100 breast. Priscilla Humberstone and Lola Woodworth took 13th and 16th to score for NC State. Humberstone's time of 1:05.58 was a personal best on the season. Erin Trau was 18th, and Lindsay Baskwell 23rd.
Three swimmers participated in the bonus consolation of the 100-yard back for the Wolfpack. Anna Maria Gazda finished first in the heat, followed closely in second by teammate Kendall Smith. Rachael Bumgardner finished sixth in the heat.
The Wolfpack will look forward to strong finishes by divers Molly Culberson and Amber O'Reilly, who qualified for Saturday's three-meter finals with sixth and seventh place finishes in the field of 27 on Saturday.
Only seven points separates sixth, seventh and eighth place heading into the final day of competition, while second and third are only five points a part. Virginia looks to be the run-away winner.
