Raleigh, N.C.-NC State head football coach Chuck Amato is now experiencing one of the few drawbacks of success. For the second time in a month, Amato has lost an assistant coach to the NFL, this time quarterbacks coach Mike Canales, who has been hired as the new wide receivers coach with the New York Jets. Earlier this month, Wolfpack offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Marty Galbraith accepted a position with the Arizona Cardinals.
An 18-year veteran of the college coaching ranks, Canales spent two seasons working with Wolfpack quarterbacks, including Philip Rivers who is on a pace that should make him the ACC's all-time leading passer sometime next season. Prior to coming to Raleigh, Canales was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at South Florida from 1996-2000, as well as quarterbacks coach at Pacific in 1995.
During his playing career, Canales was a three-year starter at quarterback under Bruce Snyder at Utah State University.
