RALEIGH, N.C. - Senior Scott Garren took sixth place at 157 pounds Saturday at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Garren was one of three Wolfpack wrestlers to advance to the medal round of the tournament, but was the only one to place.
Garren, who lost to top-ranked Ryan Bertin 11-4 in the quarterfinals, had to default for medical reasons in the bout for fifth place, losing the match to 18th-ranked Matt Lebe of West Virginia. Garren is now 4-2 for the 2003-04 season.
Earlier in the medal round, sennior 149-pounder Jake Giamoni (No. 13) fell to 17th-ranked David Dies of Brown, 9-0, and senior 165-pounder Dustin Kawa (No. 19) was pinned by 11th-ranked Kevi Prevost of Wyoming at the 4:39 mark of their bout. Giamoni is now 6-2 on the season, while Kawa is 7-2.
On Friday, Giamoni recorded decisions over Quinton Moreno of Northern Idaho (7-3) and Reed Carpenter of Virginia Tech (8-4) before losing to third-ranked Ryan Churella of Michigan by fall at 6:07. The pin was the first loss of the season for Giamoni. He will continue in the wrestle-backs on Saturday.
Garren on Friday defeated Justin Gabbard of Air Force 5-1 and 13th-ranked Andrew Shuler of Wyoming 5-3 to advance to his semifinal showdown with Bertin.
Kawa began the tournament on Friday with a pair of falls, pinning Nico Van Wyngaardt of Northern Idaho in 1:25 in the pigtail round, and then pinning Josh Gustafson of Portland State at 3:54 in the round of 32. Kawa then lost a 6-2 decision to 18th-ranked Pat Owen of Michigan in the round of 16, but rebounded with an 8-2 decision over Michael Font of Cal-Davis in the wrestle-backs.
Seven Wolfpack wrestlers were eliminated on Friday. Freshman 125-pounder Jeff Breese (3-5) lost 6-5 in overtime to Bryce Leonhardt of Wyoming, and then fell 9-4 to Jeff Sato of Columbia. Junior 141-pounder Alex Hernandez (4-4) lost a pair of major decisions, falling 13-2 to 12th-ranked Robert Becker of George Mason, and 13-1 to Douglas Withstandley of Purdue.
Junior 133-pounder Daniel Pacitti defeated Alvaro Arreola of Cal State-Fullerton 3-0 in the round of 32, but dropped a 13-3 major decision to No. 4-ranked Mark Jayne of Illinois in the second round to fall to 6-2. Edinboro's Louis Vigliotti eliminated Pacitti with a 12-2 major decision in the wrestle-backs.
Freshman heavyweight Jainor Palma defeated Dustin Sullivan of Adams State 7-2 in the pigtail round, but fell to Air Force's Kurt Skarstedt 6-5 in the round of 32. Palma fell to 2-4 with the loss. Palma won his first bout in the wrestle-backs, 5-3 over Craig Martinmaas of South Dakota State, but was eliminated in the next round by Tyler Rhodes of Northwest Wyoming, 9-0.
Sophomore 174-pounder Michael Waite (4-4) was pinned by Harvard's Eddie Jones in 5:25 in the pigtail round before battling back to take a pair of bouts in the wrestle-backs. Waite won an 8-1 decision over Trevor Moss of Northwest Wyoming in the first round of the wrestle-backs, and then beat Darin Harris of Utah Valley State 6-3. Marshall Marquardt of Dana pinned Waite at 0:53 in the third round of wrestle-backs to eliminate Waite from the tournament.
Sophomore 184-pounder Daniel Humphries (3-4) was pinned by 17th-ranked Josh Weitzel of Michigan in the pigtail round, and then fell to Casey Woodall of Adams State, 6-5. And Zach Garren (3-4), a freshman 197-pounder, dropped a 3-1 decision to Landon Seefeldt of Cal State-Fullerton in the round of 32, and was eliminated after falling 4-1 ti 15th-ranked Chase Verdoorn of Michigan.
