RALEIGH, N.C. - Top 10 finishes in men's and women's cross country, plus a return to NCAA postseason action in men's soccer have lifted NC State to 15th place in the first fall standings of the 2003-04 United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup.
The Directors' Cup is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics to the outstanding overall program in college athletics. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports - 10 men's sports and 10 women's sports. The national champion in each sport receives 100 points.
The first fall standings in the Directors' Cup are based on the final results from men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, and field hockey. Because the bowl season has just started, football is not included in the first fall standings.
NC State's women's cross country team finished sixth and the men 10th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Novemver. The women's finish was good for 72 points in the Directors' Cup standings, while the men's finish was good for 60 points. In addition, men's soccer had a resurgence in '03, earning a bid to the NCAA Soccer Tournament. That was good for an additional 25 points in the Directors' Cup standings, giving the Wolfpack 157 points.
Michigan, which had top 10 finishes in all five sports included in the first fall standings for the Directors' Cup, was in first place with 363 points. North Carolina was second with 241 points, followed by UCLA and Stanford with 225, and Wake Forest with 207. Maryland was eighth with 191 points, and Duke was 10th with 174.
All four Atlantic Coast Conference teams that finished ahead of NC State have field hockey teams and were among the 15 schools that received points in that sport. Wake Forest, Duke and Maryland finished 1-2-3 in the nation, respectively, in field hockey. NC State does not have field hockey team.
