Official Mazda Tangerine Bowl Release
ORLANDO - The Florida Citrus Sports (FCS) Bowl Selection Committee voted Tuesday morning to issue an invitation to North Carolina State to participate in the 2003 Mazda Tangerine Bowl in Orlando. The game will kickoff at 5:30 p.m. (EST) on Monday, December 22 and will be televised nationally by ESPN. Tickets to the Mazda Tangerine Bowl are $45.00 and are on-sale at Gopack.com, NC State's official athletics website.
"We are extremely excited to bring NC State back to Orlando for our bowl game," said FCS President Richard Jackson. "The Wolfpack faithful came in force two years ago and we look forward to being hospitable hosts for them again. We hope by making this early announcement the Wolfpack family will have plenty of time to huddle together and plan out a terrific bowl game vacation in Orlando."
NC State (7-5, 4-4) played in the 2001 Tangerine Bowl after the game was moved from Miami where it was played under various titles. The Wolfpack fell 34-19 to an up-and-coming Pittsburgh Panthers team in 2001. NC State's overall record in bowl games is 10-10-1.
"Having NC State in the Mazda Tangerine Bowl gives us the chance to show off Orlando to some fabulous fans," said FCS Chairman Jane Hames."We're looking forward to entertaining a strong contingent of Wolfpack fans, both on and off the field on December 22."
"We are tickled to death to come back to the Mazda Tangerine Bowl. We are delighted to make another trip to Orlando and we're determined that the third Tangerine Bowl in Orlando will be the best one yet," headcoach Chuck Amato stated after the invitation was issued. This will be NC State's fourth straight bowl appearance in as many seasons under Amato.
NC State's marquee player is senior quarterback Philip Rivers. Rivers has thrown for more than 13,000 yards and 90 touchdowns in his career and was a unanimous first-team All-ACC pick by the Atlantic Coast Sportswriters Association this week. The Mazda Tangerine Bowl will be his final collegiate game.
NC State's opponent has not been determined. The Mazda Tangerine Bowl owns the seventh selection from the Big 12 Conference and hopes to have a team in place as soon as possible.
