Pack Squads Finish Ninth at Nike Cup

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - NC State's men's and women's swimming squads took home respective ninth-place finishes concluding the third day of action at the Nike Cup in Chapel Hill. UNC was the winning women's team, and Tennessee took first for the men. Eight women added points for the Wolfpack, including freshman Rebecca Perry. The Greenville, N.C. native picked up her second NCAA "B" standard time of the Cup and anchored the Pack's scoring relay squad. Peter Pessagno had a solid finish in the mile for the men's group, taking seventh overall.
Lindsay Barwegen and Amy Baskwell opened scoring for the women's team with a solid swim in the mile. Barwegen placed 15th and Baskwell followed in 18th. Barwegen had a time of 17:13.34.
Rebecca Perry won the consolation heat of the 100 free with the third-fastest swim of the evening. Her time of 51.14 was an NCAA "B" standard, her second of the weekend. Her other qualifying time came in the 50 free. Lola Woodworth added points in the 200 breaststroke by finishing sixth in the finals heat. She qualified with a time of 2:21.07 in the preliminary swim. Karen Burbella, Priscilla Humberstone and Erin Trau also made night swims in the consolation finals with fifth-, seventh- and eighth-place finishes.
Laura Cutler finished second in the finals heat of the 200 butterfly. She qualified with a morning swim of 2:03.45. Burbella swam in the consolation heat and finished sixth. The Pack's 400 free relay squad scored in 13th-place. Liz Herron, Kerry Whitson, Rachel Bumgardner and Perry put together a time of 3:32.01.
Three men opened the evening with scoring finishes in the mile. Peter Pessagno finished seventh overall with a time of 15:48.29. Jack Deal and Chris Nixon also scored for the Pack in 11th and 18th. Robert Terrell finished third in the finals heat of the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:50.34.
Rob Yeager finished fifth in the finals of the 200 breaststroke. He turned in a time of 2:03.99. Scott Dettloff finished fifth in the finals of the 200 butterfly after qualifying with a time of 1:51.94. Dettloff turned around to anchor the ninth-place 400 free relay squad with teammates Brian Pursley, Terrell and Cristian Rojas. The team finished with a time of 3:04.39.
The women's team will return to action on Dec. 2 against UNC, again in Chapel Hill. The men's team will not return to the competition pool until the new year when it travels to Virginia for a dual meet on Jan. 17.
