ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Seniors Jake Giamoni and Dustin Kawa won individual championships Saturday, and Daniel Pacitti and Daniel Humphries each finished third to pace NC State to a fifth-place finish in the 2003 Navy Invitational.
The Citadel was the surprise winner with 110 points, upsetting 13th-ranked West Virginia by seven points. Navy was third with 95 points, and Rutgers was fourth with 94.
"I really thought we wrestled well," Wolfpack head coach Bob Guzzo said. "Jake and Dustin both won their weight classes, and several other guys really did well. I was very pleased and encouraged with how we wrestled."
Giamoni, who won all three of his matches in the tournament and improve to 4-0 on the season, defeated highly regarded Mike Torriero of West Virginia 15-9 in the championship bout at 149 pounds. Giamoni won his first bout with a 43-second pin of Jake Michael of McDaniel, and advanced to the finals with a 5-3 decision over Adam Brochetti of Navy.
Kawa rolled through his first two bouts at 165, pinning Eric Mullen of West Virginia at 3:43, and taking a major decision over Aaron Miller of Kent State. Kawa defeated Zac Fryling of West Virginia 9-7 for the title at 165.
The Wolfpack may have lost a possible chance at the team championship when senior 157-pounder Scott Garren had to default for medical reasons after one bout. The top seed at 157, Garren won his first bout with a 20-4 technical fall of John Pruitt of Navy, but aggravated a sprained knee he suffered on Wednesday night in the Pack's season-opener at Campbell.
"That probably cost of 20 points right there, so we would have been right there [for the team championship] if Scott had been able to continue," Guzzo said. "But injuries are part of the sport. I really can't be at all displeased with the way we wrestled."
