Wolfpack Continues Action in Day 2 of Nike Cup

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The second day of action at the Nike Cup is complete, and NC State has added another NCAA "B" cut to its tote. Senior co-captain Karen Burbella turned in the fastest time of the preliminaries in the 400 IM to enter the finals as the No. 1 seed with a 4:22.84 in the morning swim. The women also added points in the relay, breaststroke and backstroke events. The men's team was paced by its relay squads, and solid swimming in the breaststroke by junior Rob Yeager.
The women's team got major points from its relay squads. In the 200 medley relay, Rachel Bumgardner, Lola Woodworth, Laura Cutler and Rebecca Perry finished 13th with a time of 1:47.84. Amy Baskwell, Kerry Whitson, Lindsay Barwegen and Perry, all of whom are freshmen, put together a fifth-place time of 7:32.59 in the 800 free relay. The team of Karen Burbella, Elizabeth Herron, Catherine Parks and Kendall Smith also finished in scoring position, placing 16th.
Burbella was the No. 1 seed in the 400 IM after qualifying with a time of 4:22.84 in the morning's preliminary swim. The time was an NCAA "B" cut. She finished the evening in fourth place with a time of 4:23.23 in the super final. Jessica Koenig finished fourth in the finals heat with a time of 4:28.17, and Cutler won the consolation heat with a time of 4:27.71. Erin Trau also made a consolation swim, finishing fifth in the heat.
Barwegen 's preliminary time of 1:54.30 in the 200 free made her eligible for the consolation heat in the evening, where she finished sixth in the race. Woodworth finished third in the finals heat of the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.78, and Priscilla Humberstone took seventh in the consolation swim. Perry won the consolation heat of the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.26, a mark that was the eighth-fastest of the evening.
The men's squad opened scoring with a 14th-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Robert Terrell, Rob Yeager, Scott Dettloff and John Hudson put together a time of 1:34.12 in the event. Dettloff also competed in the 100 butterfly after qualifying with a time of 50.36. He finished eighth in the consolation heat.
Yeager won the consolation heat of the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.20 to add points for the Pack. Andy Bauman finished in scoring position in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.64.
Jack Deal, Hudson, Cristian Rojas and Peter Pessagno finished 10th in the 800 free relay with a time of 6:49.11.
Saturday will be the third and final day of action in the Nike Cup. Preliminary swims will start at 10 a.m. with finals to follow at 6 p.m. in the Koury Natatorium on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill.
