Day 1 Complete at the Nike Cup

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Nike Cup got underway in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Thursday. NC State teams are ninth and 10th after the first day of action. Swims will continue through Saturday at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium. The women's squad was led by freshman Rebecca Perry. The Greenville, N.C. native earned an NCAA "B" cut time in the 50 free, and won the consolation heat of the 200 IM to lead scoring. The men's team was solid in the relay events, and earned points off of a strong performance by Peter Pessagno in the 500 free.
The women's team opened the night swims with a 12th-place finish in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:37.67. Melissa Jamerino, Rebecca Perry, Shannon Brewer and Rachel Bumgardner teamed together to score for the Pack.
The Pack scored major points in the 200 IM. Perry turned in the fastest time of the evening for the team with a 2:06.14. Her time was the ninth-fastest of the night, and was the winning time in the consolation heat. Karen Burbella qualified to swim in the finals and finished seventh in her heat with a 2:07.03. Laura Cutler and Jessica Koenig also scored for the Pack with respective fourth- and fifth-place finishes in the consolation heat.
Perry also excelled in the 50 free on Thursday evening, winning the finals with an NCAA "B" cut of 23.55
The women's team closed its evening with a 12th-place finish in the 400 Medley Relay. Perry, Lola Woodworth, Cutler and Bumgardner finished in 3:55.48.
The Pack men got on the board in scoring position with a 14th-place finish in the 200 free relay. John Hudson, Robert Terrell, Cristian Rojas and Scott Dettloff put together a time of 1:24.52. Peter Pessagno scored for the Pack with a time of 4:32.91 in the consolation heat of the 500 free. Jack Deal turned in a time of 4:38.57.
The men's team finished 13th in the 400 Medley relay with a time of 3:24.42. Terrell, Brian Pursley, Dettloff and Hudson swam for the squad.
Action will continue Friday morning with preliminary qualifying swims starting at 10 a.m. Finals will commence at 6:00 p.m.
