MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -- Led by the strong performance of freshman Jennifer Marshall, who has led the team in four of the six air rifle matches, NC State won the SEARC #3 in NCAA scoring with a team score of 1,500. The Wolfpack lost a tiebreaker for second place based on SEARC rules. Marshall fired a 380, good for third on the match overall. She was joined on the scoring squad by Ryan Dorety (376), Kirk Freeman (374) and Matthew Gifford (370). Laura Ferrell fired a 373, her personal best, as NC State placed five shooters in the top-11 overall. NC State has won all three SEARC matches this season.
NC State improved to 23-2 overall and 14-2 in the SEARC. The Wolfpack is a perfect 7-0 in NCAA scoring over The Citadel.
"We fired a strong overall match with a solid conference win over Birmingham-Southern and a close loss to The Citadel," coach Keith Miller said. "We had a solid performance in smallbore, which is out last match until February. We have showed improvement and progress across the board all fall, and that will translate into great things in the spring."
Marshall has fired four rounds in six matches in the 380's. NC State as a team had only three 380 or better individual performances last year, when they finished tied for 26th in the nation. Ryan Dorety continued her accurate shooting with a 376, good for second on the team, yet only her third best score this year. She fired a career-best 379 to lead the team in the SEARC #1.
John Maroglio fired a 361 and Christine Kimball a 359 to round out the team scores.
With the win, NC State maintained its conference lead with an average of 1,509.667 over The Citadel at 1,497.667. Birmingham Southern College won the SEARC championship last year, and is third in the standing to this point with a 1,493 average.
In smallbore, NC State competed head-to-head with Ga. Military, winning 2,190 to 2,075. Both teams fired a "half course" of 20 shots, with Freeman taking top individual honors with a 561. Marshall fired a 552 while Ryan Dorety shot a 549 for third overall. NC State had four of the top-five shooters against Georgia Military, as Laura Ferrell fired a 537 for fifth.
NC State will host North Carolina in the final match of the fall on Nov. 15. It will be held at the Wake County Range in Holly Springs, N.C.
