White Team Earns Bragging Rights in Annual Intrasquad Scrimmage

The NC State swimming & diving team welcomed the start of the 2003-04 season on Saturday with its annual Red and White Meet. The white team, led by captains Justin Smith and Karen Burbella, won the bragging rights. The squad witnessed several remarkable swims, including a few by its newcomers.
Red-team quartets swept the first event. The team of Rachel Bumgardner, Halle Kiehlmier, Jessica Koenig and Melissa Jamerino opened the meet with a win in the 400 Medley Relay. Teammates Steve Cowling, Brian Pursley, Kevin Devine and Cristian Rojas won also, putting the Red team ahead early.
Red's Pete Pessagno and White's Kerry Whitson were winners in the 1000 Free. The white team dominated the 200 Free with Liz Herron and Chris Nixon posting wins for their squads. White added more points in the 50 free with Rebecca Perry and Scott Dettloff touching the wall first in their respective races.
Koenig scored big for the Red team in the 200 IM and Rob Yeager struck back in the men's race with a big finish for the White squad.
The Red team took the 200 Relay for the women, this time Shannon Brewer swam the leadoff leg, followed by Kiehlmier, Bumgardner and Jamerino. Andy Bauman, Rob Terrell, Jack Deal and Dettloff made the White squad winners in their race.
Bumgardner, Kiehlmier, Koenig and Jamerino were victorious in the 200 Medley Relay, and Bauman, Yeager, Dettloff and Terrell added more points for the White team in the men's race. Koenig turned around and put up an outstanding performance in the 100 Fly for the Red squad, as did Nixon in the men's race for the White squad.
The White team swept the top three spots in the women's 100 Free with freshman Rebecca Perry leading the way. Jenny Bland and Liz Herron finished two and three. White's Dettloff was the first to finish in the men's race. Two freshmen, Perry and Mallory Estil, finished in the front for the white team in the women's 100 back. Kevin Barkley won the men's race for the Red team.
Freshmen again headed the way in the 500 Free with Amy Baskwell, younger sister of Lindsay Baskwell, and Kerry Whitson finishing one and two for the Red and White teams respectively. Pessagono claimed victory for the Red squad in the men's race. Lola Woodworth, an Olympic Trials qualifier, and Rob Yeager won the 100 Breaststroke for their White squad.
Koenig, A. Baskwell, Emily Clabaugh and Jamerino were winners for Red in the 400 Free Relay, but White's Deal, Terrell, Bauman and Dettloff struck back for the White team in the men's race.
The divers welcomed newcomer Vitor Assuncao into the mix. The freshman, who was a captain and finalist in the Junior Pan-Am games over the summer, had a number of remarkable dives, as did returning All-ACC honoree Molly Culberson. Newcomers to the boards, Brian Pursley and Kevin Barkley also scored points for their teams with unique performances of their own.
The team will open open the duals season on October 18, jumping right into Atlantic Coast Conference action, as host to Maryland at 11 a.m. at the Casey Aquatics Center.
