Pack Men Post Win Over ECU

RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State moved to 3-1 on the season with a win over East Carolina (2-1) on Tuesday evening in the Willis Casey Aquatics Center. The Wolfpack won 12 of 13 events en route to a 149-75 victory over the visiting Pirates. Sophomore Scott Dettloff earned wins in the 50 free and 200 butterfly, and anchored the winning 400 free relay team, while freestylers Peter Pessagno and John Hudson, and freshman diver Vitor Assuncao captured two wins apiece.
The relay squad of Robert Terrell, Brian Pursley, Kevin Devine and Cristian Rojas scored the first points of the night for the Wolfpack, opening the meet with a win in the 400 medley in a time of 3:28.87. Pessagno led a one-two-three sweep in the 1000 free, the team's second of the season at home. Pessagno, a junior, touched in 9:38.61, leading teammates Seth Hoffman and Billy Booth to the wall. Hudson was a winner in the 200 free, posting a time of 1:42.75. Jack Deal and Jorge Gutierrez also scored for the Pack.
Dettloff and Terrell finished one and two in the 50 free. Dettloff turned in a winning time of 21.51. Devine also scored for the Pack. Dettloff later won the 200 fly for the Pack, touching in 1:52.68. Hoffman finished in third for NC State.
ECU's Casey Cronin posted the only Pirate win of the evening, winning the 200 IM in 1:53.99. Rojas and Chris Nixon, a junior, finished second and third, sophomore Rick Scott scored fifth. Hudson won the 100 free for the Wolfpack in a time of 46.56, Terrell scored fourth for NC State. Terrell then won the next event with a time of 1:55.71. He is undefeated after four swims in the event this season. Sophomore Andy Bauman finished second.
Pessagno led two other Wolfpack scorers in the 500 free, turning in a time of 4:37.59. Nixon and Deal took third and fourth. Pursley and junior Rob Yeager finished one and two in the 200 breast. Pursley touched in 2:06.97, and Yeager in 2:07.02. Both times were season-bests for the two.
Hudson, Yeager, Gutierrez and Dettloff put together a winning time of 3:09.30 in the 400 free relay.
Assuncao captured his seventh and eighth wins of the season on the 1- and 3-meter boards. He scored a 344.25 on the 1-meter and a 335.25 on the 3-meter. The Pack's Steve House finished fourth on both boards.
Members of the Pack will be in action on Friday, Oct. 31 at the Tar Heel Mile Meet in Chapel Hill, N.C. Action will begin at 5 p.m.
