Wolfpack Men Defeat Fighting Irish

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State men's swimming and diving squad defeated Notre Dame Thursday evening in the Willis Casey Aquatics Center. The squad posted victories in 12 of the 14 events, leading to a 139-98 win over the Irish. Freshman diver Vitor Assuncao collected his third and fourth wins of the season on the boards and added the school record on the 3-Meter to his resume, and broke his previous school record on the 1-Meter.
Assuncao's put up a score of 363.45 on the 3-Meter board, shattering the previous school-best of 343.05 set by Todd Smith in 1995. He added nearly 13 points to his record score on the 1-Meter, turning in a new mark of 357.38. Last Saturday, Assuncao scored a 344.55 to write his name in the record books. Steve House finished third on both boards.
The Wolfpack opened the meet with a win in the 400 Medley Relay. The quartet of Robert Terrell, Brian Pursley, Kevin Devine and Scott Dettloff put together a winning time of 3:24.81. Terrell led off the race with a split of 51.67 after 100 meters, a mark that stands as the fastest in the conference. Notre Dame squads finished two and three.
Two Wolfpack men scored in the mile. Peter Pessagno won the 1650 Free with a time of 15:55.48. Chris Nixon finished fourth for NC State.
John Hudson posted the winning time of 1:42.82 in the 200 Free, and Jack Deal added points with a fourth-place finish. Dettloff won the 50 Free in 21.47. Terrell and Devine took third and fifth, respectively. Rob Yeager used his speed in the breaststroke to move past the Irish's Tim Kegelman for the win in the 200 IM. Yeager touched the wall in 1:54.19. Cristian Rojas finished fourth.
Notre Dame picked up its first win of the night in the 200 Fly. Irishmen scored in first, second and fourth, led by Patrick Heffernan with a time of 1:53.93. The Pack's Devine scored in third and Seth Hoffman fifth.
Hudson claimed his second win of the evening with a time of 46.83 in the 100 Free. Brian Pursley finished in second place. Terrell picked up his second consecutive win in the 200 Back with a time of 1:51.92. Rojas took fifth.
Notre Dame's Ted Brown won the 500 Free in 4:37.00. Pessagno and Nixon scored second and fourth.
The Pack took a one-two finish in the 200 Breast, led by the efforts of Pursley. His time of 2:04.79 was just seven one-hundredths of a second better than his teammate Yeager. Hudson, Deal, Rojas and Dettloff added the Pack's final points with a win in the 400 Free Relay. Hudson led off in 47.25, immediately giving the Pack the advantage.
The women's diving squads also competed. Meghan Perry-Eaton of Notre Dame won the 1-Meter with a 287.55. Molly Culberson, Christy Welch and Ashley Lamberton finished second, third and fourth. Culberson took the top honors on the 3-Meter with a 312.83. Perry-Eaton was second and Welch finished third. Culberson and Welch qualified for the NCAA Zones with their scores.
The Pack will pick up league action Saturday in Atlanta versus Georgia Tech. The meet will mark the first event held in the recently renovated Georgia Tech Aquatics Center. Live results will be posted as they become official on www.ramblingwreck.com. Meet time is set for noon.
