RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State wrestling team will venture out of conference January 24 with a road match at Virginia Military Institute. The match begins at 6:15 p.m. The Wolfpack is 2-4 in dual matches after a 22-15 win at Maryland on January 18. VMI, which finished second in the Virginia State Intercollegiate Championships, is 2-2. The Keydets' last dual bout was a 35-6 thumping of George Mason.
NC State will be led by junior 165-pounder Dustin Kawa, who is 5-1 at 165 and 9-3 on the season, which includes six bouts at 174. Kawa has won five matches in a row at 165, including a pair of major decisions.
In addition, senior 125-pounder George Cintron is 8-4 on the season and carries a five-bout winning streak into the VMI bout. Sophomore Kevin Gabrielson (5-4 overall and 1-1 at 174), junior Jake Giamoni (7-7 at 149) and junior Ryan McCallum (7-9) all have played key roles for NC State this season.
The Wolfpack will be without undefeated 157-pounder Scott Garren, who is 8-0 and ranked No. 14 by Intermat. Garren is recovering from a concussion suffered in practice earlier this month. His bout with VMI senior Adam Britt would have been a headliner. Britt is ranked No. 15 by Intermat.
