Cavaliers Too Strong For Wolfpack Swimming & Diving

Raleigh, N.C. - NC State swimming & diving suffered its second straight loss in league competition on Saturday afternoon to the Virginia Cavaliers. The Pack men fell in a 143-100 decision, and the women were outscored 153-90. Molly Culberson had another stellar performance on the boards, sweeping the competition on the 1- and 3- meter boards, while Rob Yeager continued to excel in the 200 breast. The team got a great contribution from newcomer Cullen Jones who tied for first in the 50 free and swam the anchor leg of the 400 medley relay team that also tied for first.
Culberson went 4-0 on the weekend with wins today against the diving squad from UVa. On Friday, the freshman defeated the defending ACC Champions Chelsie Lerew and Courtney McClow from Florida State. Culberson got support from senior Erin Bailey who finished second on the 3-meter and third on the 1-meter.
Jessica Koenig took second in th 200 IM, and Kendall Smith was third in the 100 free. Anna Maria Gazda finished second in the 200 back, and Erin Trau, Karen Burbella and Laura Cutler scored for the Wolfpack in the 200 breast.
The 400 medley relay team of Steven Cowling, Scott Detloff, Yeager and Jones finished in a time of 3:22.41 to tie for first in the opening event. Two events later, Jones returned to the pool and tied UVa's Jonathan Haag in the 50 free with a time of 21.30. Detloff took second in the 100 free.
Yeager won his third race of the weekend with a time of 2:02.94 in the 200 breast.
With the losses, the Wolfpack men drop to 6-2 (2-2), and the women drop to .500 at 5-5 (1-3). The women will return to action on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. when they host No. 11 UNC.
