Chancellor Fox, Director Fowler, Coach Amato and several Wolfpack players were guests at the governor's mansion in Raleigh this afternoon, as Governor Mike Easley proclaimed tomorrow "Wolfpack Day" in the state of North Carolina in recognition of NC State's great 2002 campaign.
A handful of seniors and Gator Bowl MVP Philip Rivers represented the 2002 team, as Easley visited with the group in the entrance hall of the mansion and commended the efforts of the team and the entire university.
Coach Amato presented the Governor with a Wolfpack jersey with his name emblazoned on the back, and Governor Easley even struck a couple of Heisman poses after the ceremony. Senior defensive end George Anderson spoke for the team in thanking the governor for such a high honor.
After the ceremony, the local media was on hand for interviews and several members of the governor's staff lined up for photos with the Wolfpack players and Coach Amato.
The Governor's proclamation follows:
WOLFPACK DAY--2003
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, on March 12, 1892, the North Carolina A&M Aggies played their first and only football game that year at the Raleigh Athletic Park (now Pullen Park). Their opponent was Raleigh Male Academy, and the Aggies won 12-6; and
WHEREAS, one-hundred and eleven years later, the North Carolina A&M Aggies are known as the North Carolina State University Wolfpack, and that one-game season has expanded to 14 games; and
WHEREAS, N.C. State closed out its best football season ever with a record of 11-3. This record included back-to-back wins over the Florida State Seminoles and the New Year's Day Gator Bowl victory over the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, two highly respected national programs; and
WHEREAS, because of their exemplary season, the Wolfpack, with Coach Chuck Amato at the helm, was ranked 12th in the final Associated Press poll, the school's highest final ranking since 1974; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting that these accomplishments came during the 50th Anniversary of the Atlantic Coast Conference, of which North Carolina State University is a charter member; and
WHEREAS, the North Carolina State University Wolfpack has the respect and pride of all North Carolinians;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, MICHAEL F. EASLEY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim Saturday, January 11, 2003, as "WOLFPACK DAY" in North Carolina, and urge our citizens to support this observance.
