Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men's soccer team defeated UNC Pembroke 5-0 in an exhibition game Wednesday afternoon at Method Road Soccer Stadium. Playing in the first of two exhibition games this preseason, NC State used this high offensive output in preparation for the upcoming 2002 season.
The contest was played in three 25 minute periods, differing from the normal two 45 minutes halves.
Junior forward Isreal Mejia, who led the Pack in scoring last season, starting the Wolfpack scoring with a goal in the 10th minute of the game. He took a through ball from senior Michael Karim that led to a breakaway down the right side of the field. Karim would then put the Pack up 2-0 with a penalty kick in the 24th minute.
Freshman Aaron King made his presence off the bench felt right away, scoring the next two Wolfpack goals. King's first goal was a breakaway in the 29th minute, less than a minute after he entered the contest. Only four minutes after that, goalie Mitchell Watson started the Pack's next goal punting the ball past midfield. Sophomore Justin Branch then flicked the ball on with a header to King who struck it into the UNC Pembroke net.
Junior Scott MacNeill scored the final goal of the game with a rocket of a shot from 30 yards out off an assist from freshman John Queeley.
Watson recorded the shutout with four saves.
NC State will play one final exhibition this Sunday when the Pack hosts Montreat College at 2:00 p.m.
