2002 Football Preseason Diary, Day 15

I think we could all learn a lesson from young A.J. Davis. After breaking his leg yesterday and learning that he will have surgery next week and might miss a good bit of playing time, I expected him to be pretty down in the dumps. But when he hobbled out to the practice field this morning on his crutches, he had a big smile on his face and a positive word for everybody he met. J.J. Washington, who had a major knee injury two years ago, has been busy encouraging A.J. on the field all preseason and is now being an encouragement off the field as well. It's great to see that teamwork doesn't just apply to football.
Greg Golden has been doing some limited work with the defensive backs all preseason, but will be a little more actively involved now that Davis is injured. But Golden is still wearing red and running the football - I think our coaches are confident that he might be able to help at both spots if needed. Victor Stephens will also see more action at corner.
I haven't seen Dovonte Edwards, and just found out that they won't be exactly sure about the extent of his injury until next week when some of the swelling goes down in his knee. The good news is that there is no "major ligament" involved, so hopefully he'll be back in action soon.
It was VERY humid on the field this morning, almost oppressively so. But the guys were pretty upbeat in spite of the weather. When walk-on Joe Sinford (who is known as "Rudy") intercepted a pass during pass-skel. and ran it back, the entire defense went nuts. Even the linemen down on the other end of the field turned around and cheered.
The team will be back out tonight, concentrating on the running game (this morning was a more pass-oriented practice). Tomorrow will be the dress rehearsal for the game, with the team having a pregame meal and going through the whole pregame routine.
