RALEIGH, N.C.--Eight games against participants in last year's NCAA Tournament, a home game at Reynolds Coliseum, a berth in the Jimmy V Classic, and 100 percent television coverage highlight the 2002-03 NC State men's basketball schedule, released today by the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Coming off an outstanding regular season and a strong showing in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, the Wolfpack will play two regular season games each against the last two national champions, Maryland and Duke, and will have four non-conference games against teams that won at least one game in last year's NCAA Tournament.
In addition to the always rigorous 16-game Atlantic Coast Conference schedule, NC State will play non-conference games against Northwestern in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Gonzaga in the Jimmy V Classic, and Boston College at the Entertainment and Sports Arena. South Carolina, the 2002 NIT runner-up, also will come to the ESA, and the Pack will travel to Philadelphia for a game against Temple, which took third place in last year's NIT.
"I really believe that our schedule is among the most competitive and challenging in the country," Wolfpack coach Herb Sendek said. "We will receive outstanding TV exposure, and surely provide our fans with fun, exciting match-ups. It is particularly fitting that we will play in the Jimmy V Classic on the 20th anniversary of the '83 national championship."
The upcoming season will see NC State return to Reynolds Coliseum for its first game there since moving to the ESA for the 1999-2000 season. The Wolfpack will play North Carolina A&T in Reynolds on Saturday, Dec. 14.
The 2002-03 schedule marks a first for NC State in that all 27 regular-season games will be televised, including 16 that will be carried nationally by one of the national broadcast networks or by a national cable affiliate. The Fox Sports Net will carry seven NC State games, and ESPN or ESPN2 will broadcast six. ABC will televise two Wolfpack games, and CBS will pick up one. The remainder will be broadcast on the ACC's regional network through Raycom Sports.
