As it continues to prepare for its season opener against New Mexico on August 24th, the NC State football team held its second scrimmage of the preseason Wednesday afternoon at Carter-Finley Stadium. Read what head coach Chuck Amato had to say following the scrimmage.
Coach Amato: "If there was a disappointing factor, it was that when we moved the ball we didn't score. When we got to situational things, the number one offense dominated and did what it was supposed to do. The one defense also dominated. The other part of it is that everything is so skewed because of the way we do it. If they have a 10-play drive and they get stopped, say they fumble or something, the offense can start over on first down. Our offensive line is coming, but I don't think we've jelled yet. It could up being pretty good, but right now we're not there yet. We had entirely too many penalties. We had more penalties than we had last week (in the first scrimmage). The bad part of it is that [Sean] Burton (quad)didn't practice, [Sheldon] Lewin (shoulder) didn't practice and [Adam] Kiker (back) didn't practice. A.J. Davis is getting his ankle x-rayed right now and Dovonte Edwards is having an MRI on his knee at nine o'clock tonight. They don't want to speculate one way or the other right now. We'll know when we get that back tomorrow morning.
Would it be safe to say this wasn't the best scrimmage you've been involved in?
Coach Amato: Yea, result wise. But if one team doesn't score, that might mean the other side is doing something good. If that means we're getting better defensively, I'll take it because I've said all along: until we can play great defense consistently, we'll never be a great team. We're still not there yet."
How much longer will you be in two-a-days?
Coach Amato: "Tomorrow may be the last day. Friday, we'll have a warm-up scrimmage, which is just a one-a-day."
This was T.A. McLendon's first scrimmage. How did he perform?
Coach Amato: "He did some good things. He's got to stop celebrating too much when he does something good, but he was excited. T.A. is going to be all right. He's going to be really good. [Greg] Golden is showing some things. He needs all the scrimmaging he can get, but we're going to cut that down a little bit."
