RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State slid past No. 75 Winthrop Monday afternoon in women's tennis action by gaining the important doubles point with a sweep of the three matches and wins in three of the six singles matches. Loni Worsley picked up her second straight win, while Jennifer Jassawalla moved to 11 wins on the season, and has won four of her last five matches.
NC State picked up the decisive doubles point by sweeping the three matches. Katrina Gildemeister and Kristen Nicholls paired up for their 20th appearance of the season and made it a memorable one, downing Judit Trunkos and Renata Caceres easily, 8-2. Jassawalla brought her recent winning touch into doubles action today. Pairing up with Myrna Bawono, the tandem defeated Ana Simanca and Jenny Andrade in a tight match, 8-6. In the No. 3 doubles, Loni Worsley and Danielle Staddelmann handed Renata Barreto and Jacki Deason a loss, 8-4.
In singles action, Katrina Gildemeister got back on track after a rough week of ACC competition. In the No. 1 match, Gildemeister took the first set before Winthrop's Trunkos fought back to force a third. Gildemeister prevailed in the third set to finish 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. In the No. 4 match, Jennifer Jassawalla took down Caceres with ease, shutting her out in the first set and only allowing one point in the second. Loni Worsley continued her late-season stride with a win over Natasha Lucki. Worsley allowed one point in the first set and forced a shutout in the second to finish strong.
Winthrop's three points came in victories in the No. 2, 3 and 5 matches. Myrna Bawono put out a great effort, but fell short to Barreto, 7-5, 6-4. In the three-spot for the Pack, Kristen Nicholls forced a third set with Andrade after falling behind in the first. Andrade picked up the hard-fought win, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4. Danielle Staddelmann gave Winthrop's Simanca a challenge in the first set of the No. 5 match, but Simanca took the advantage late to take the set, 7-6. Simanca had a strong finish and won the match with a second set of 6-2.
The win moves the Wolfpack to 9-11 overall, while Winthrop takes the loss and falls to 13-4.
NC State will return to the courts Saturday afternoon to face conference foe Virginia. The Wahoos are currently ranked No. 54 in the nation and hold a record of 8-6 overall, 1-4 in the conference.
