RALEIGH, N.C. - Grant Stanley singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning, and Mike Miello drove in an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to lift Duke to a 4-2 victory over NC State in Atlantic Coast Conference baseball action Sunday at Doak Field.
The win was Duke's first in nine ACC games. The Blue Devils improved to 18-19 overall. NC State fell to 24-14 overall and 4-8 in the ACC. Duke starter Jeff Alleva (5-4) got the win with nine strong innings. He allowed two runs, one of them earned, on six hits. He walked two and struck out seven. Zach Schreiber pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his first save of the season. Wolfpack reliever Phillip Davidson (4-4) took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in three innings of work.
For the most part, the game was dominated by Alleva and NC State starter Mike Prochaska, who allowed just two runs, one earned, on six hits in seven innings. Prochaska walked two and fanned five. Both starters went through the first three innings without allowing a run, and Prochaska shut the Blue Devils down in the top of the fourth.
The Wolfpack finally broke the logjam of zeroes with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Brian Wright led off with a solid single to right field, and David Hicks lined a double into the left-field corner. Justin Riley singled into the hole between shortstop and third base to send Wright home with the first run of the game.
Duke tied the game with an unearned run in the top of the fifth. Blake Walker reached on a one-out error by shortstop Chad Orvella, and went to third on Brian Patrick's single to center. Patrick went to second when center fielder Joe Gaetti overran the ball for an error, putting runners on second and third with one out. Bryan Smith grounded to third and Jeremy Dutton threw home to retire Walker for the second out, but Kevin Kelly lined a single to left to drive in Patrick and even the score at 1-1.
The Blue Devils broke the tie in the top of the seventh when Patrick hit a one-out double to left and scored on Kelly's two-out line single to right. That snapped a string of 24 consecutive innings with allowing an earned run by Prochaska.
The Wolfpack tied the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh. Matt Butler walked with one out, and Orvella singled to put runners on first and second. Adam Hargrave hit a sharp grounder to third, and Smith made an errant relay throw in attempting to turn the double play, allowing Butler to cross the plate and knot the score at 2-2.
Duke threatened in the eighth and ninth, but Davidson pitched out of trouble both times. In the eighth he retired Mike Miello on a grounder to second with the potential go-ahead run on second and two down, and in the ninth he struck out Kelly with the go-ahead run on third and two away.
The Blue Devils finally got to Davidson in the top of the 10th. Larry Broadway and Drew Jerdan led off with singles to left, and after pinch-hiter Thomas Furlow forced Broadway at third on a sacrifice attempt, Stanley hit a line drive to center field to break the tie. Furlow went to third on the play, and scored a big insurance run on Miello's fly ball to left, giving Duke a 4-2 lead.
The Wolfpack will return to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. with a home game against UNC-Wilmington.
