RALEIGH, N.C. - Freshman righthander Michael Rogers will be out indefinitely after suffering a fractured right fibula in NC State's 8-6 loss to Wake Forest on Saturday. Rogers, whose condition will be reevaluated early this coming week, will be in a cast for approximately 6-8 weeks. Barring complications, his rehabilitation should be fairly uneventful, but he could be lost for the season.
Rogers was injured when a line drive off the bat of Deacons shortstop Ben Ingold struck the Wolfpack hurler directly on the lower portion of his right leg in the fifth inning of Saturday's game. Rogers was able to field the ball, but his throw to home plate was wide, and two runs scored on the play.
Rogers was having an excellent freshman season for the Wolfpack. He is 3-2 with a team-best 3.63 ERA. In seven appearances, six of them starts, he worked 39 2/3 innings and allowed 37 hits, walked 18 and struck out 41. Opponents were batting .247 against Rogers, and he had allowed just seven extra-base hits all season. Rogers had both of the team's shutouts, which came in consecutive starts in late February and early March.
