Wolfpack Men Stand Seventh After Day One

College Park, Md. - The NC State men's swimming/diving squad stands seventh after the first day of competition in the ACC Championships in College Park, Md. The Wolfpack has 61 points, trailing Virginia (284), North Carolina and Georgia Tech (158), Florida State (120), Clemson (119) and Maryland (93). Duke is eighth with two points.
NC State started the event on a positive note when the 200 freestyle relay team of Kevin Devine, Chris Swank, Andy Seitz and Cristian Rojas finished fourth in a time of 1:22.36.
In the next event, freshman Jack Deal made the finals in the 500 freestyle, taking seventh with a mark of 4:28.11. Chris Nixon also swam for the Wolfpack, finishing 16th (4:35.07), followed by Peter Pessagno (17th, 4:29.61) and Dan Kesler (24th, 4:36.40).
Senior Tim Haley led the charge for NC State in the 200 IM, taking 12th in a time of 1:50.77. Rojas also took 16th in the event (1:54.04), followed by Rob Yeager (19th, 1:52.98), Ed Hill (27th, 1:54.75) and Suha Akman (29th, 1:54.91).
Swank was the highest NC State finisher in the 50 free (14th), finishing with a time of 20.91. Several other Wolfpack swimmers competed in the event. They were: Devine (19th, 20.98), Seitz (32nd, 21.31), Justin Smith (35th, 21.51), Ben Humphrey (36th, 21.60), Jorge Gutierrez (38th, 21.69), Kevin Barkley (45th, 22.14) and Charlie Hughes (51st, 24.47).
In the sixth event of the day, Jared Bench finished 12th in the 1-meter diving (242.85), followed by Steven House (14th, 165.30).
Competition will continue tomorrow and conclude on Saturday.
