RALEIGH, N.C. - It was Freshman Day at Doak Field on Saturday. Freshman righthander Mike Rogers pitched a seven-inning two-hit shutout and freshman designated hitter Tim Coffield had three hits, including a home run, and five RBIs to lead NC State to an 11-0 victory over Coppin State in the second game of a three-game series. The game was shortened to seven innings because of the 10-run rule.
NC State's victory extended its winning streak to four games and lifted the Wolfpack to 6-3 on the season. Coppin State lost for the fouth time in as many outings.
Rogers, who evened his record at 1-1 with the victory, went the distance, walking two and striking out a career-high 10. Senior righthander Brad Hundertmark (0-2) started and took the loss for the Eagles, allowing 11 runs, eight of them earned, on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked six and struck out two.
The Wolfpack got off to a sluggish start offensively, going down in order in the bottom of the first and then leaving the bases loaded in the second. But with two men down and none on the bottom of the third, NC State finally got the offense in gear. Brian Wright doubled and scored on David Hicks's single to right. Coffield followed with a long home run to left-center, his second in as many days, to give the Wolfpack a 3-0 lead
Justin Riley grounded to third for what should have been the final out of the inning, but was safe a throwing error. NC State cashed the miscue in for another run when Adam Hargrave singled to put runners on first and second, and Joe Gaetti dropped an RBI-single into left field for a 4-0 lead.
NC State added two more unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth. Wright led off and reached on an error by right fielder Danny Cruz. Two outs later, Riley tripled off the wall in right to drive in Wright, and Hargrave singled up the middle to score Riley, giving the Wolfpack a 6-0 lead after five innings.
Hundertmark finally ran out of steam in the bottom of the sixth, walking four consecutive batters with one out to force in a run, and then surrendering a three-run double to left-center by Coffield to make it 10-0. That gave Coffield five RBIs for the game and 11 for the first two games of the series. Shortstop Kevin Solano came on in relief for Coppin State, and Riley singled to left to drive in Coffield and make it 11-0, Wolfpack.
Notes: Rogers now has retired 41 of the last 50 men he has faced, striking out 18 and walking three over that span.
