Wolfpack Women Sixth After Day 2 Of ACC Championships

College Park, Md.-Sophomore Erika Newell finished second at the ACC Championships in the 100 backstroke for the NC State women, who stand sixth (209 points) after the second day of competition at the ACC Swimming/Diving Championships.
Newell, whose final time of 56.08 was good enough to qualify for the NCAA Championships under the "B" cut standard of 56.50, was just behind event-winner Christy Watkins of North Carolina (54.88). Annamaria Gazda also competed in the event for NC State, taking 16th in a time of 58.17.
The Wolfpack also posted a solid performance in the 800 free relay (Caroline Curran, Katie Sheridan, Kathleen Tonini and Mandy Horn) with a time of 7:32.34 (5th).
NC State's 200 medley relay squad (Newell, Karen Cone, Shana Bullock and Gazda) gave the Wolfpack 22 points by virtue of their eighth-place finish in the event (1:45.38).
Horn had a good day individually, earning her NCAA "B" cut in the 200 freestyle with a seventh overall finish in 1:50.66, just under the qualifying mark of 1:51.09. Sheridan (12th, 1:52.30), Tonini (14th, 1:52.86) and Andrea Hastings (18th, 1:53.94) also took part in the event for the Wolfpack.
Caroline Curran posted an eighth overall finish in the 400 IM (4:26.23), followed by Karen Burbella (11th, 4:26.51) and Laura Cutler (17th, 4:28.19).
Bullock (14th, 57.23), Elizabeth Herron (15th, 57.38), Sarah Kos (20th, 58.49) and Catherine Parks (22nd, 59.26) all competed for the Wolfpack in the 100 butterfly, as did Cone (17th, t-1:06.71), Bridgett Bowers (19th, 1:07.49) and Lindsay Holman (21st, 1:11.12) in the 100 breaststroke.
Day three, the final day of competition, is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. with preliminaries and finals will take place at 7:00 p.m.
