Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State women's golf team will return to the course this weekend in nearby Chapel Hill for the 2002 Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational. The Wolfpack will be one of 15 teams participating in the event, which is scheduled to tee off Friday morning at 9:00 a.m.
NC State is coming off of a fine fifth place finish at the ACC/SEC Challenge. After its performance, the Wolfpack made a jump in the Golfweek/Sagarin performance index and enters the tournament as the No. 25 team in the nation. Two NC State golfers had career firsts in the Challenge. Sarah Bonner carded her first hole-in-one during the first round on a par 3, 146 yard hole, while Briana Vega posted her first collegiate round at par.
The Wolfpack has now posted two top-six performances this fall and hopes to improve on its recent success this weekend at the Franklin Street Trust. The 56-hole tournament will take place on the par 72, 6181 yard Finley Golf Course. Eighteen holes are scheduled for play on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with Friday tee times beginning at 9:00 a.m.
NC State will line-up a score card including Vega, Bonner, Colby Cobb, Courtney Pomeranz and Erica Wein. Leslie Stubblefield will participate as an individual competitor. Cobb was the Wolfpack's top finisher a year ago in the event, finishing in a tie for 13th. The group will get a practice round on Thursday to get acquainted with the course.
"We are hoping to continue our steady play this weekend," says 2001 ACC Coach of the Year Page Marsh. "Our goal this week is to score three consistent rounds in the tournament. We want to finish strong on Sunday and consistency is important in doing so. This team continually proves to me on a day in and day out basis that it is committed to meeting the goals we set before each tournament and this is all we can ask. After playing in two tournaments, we are very satisfied with our accomplishments and hope to improve each week."
The Wolfpack will face some of the nation's toughest competition this weekend, including the defending national champion, Duke and current No. 1 Oklahoma State. Florida State, Furman, Kentucky, Memphis, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, South Carolina, South Florida, Tulane, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington and Wake Forest will also be participating. The field consists of eight teams currently ranked in the top 30 of the Golfweek rankings, while three teams boast four of the nations top individual performers.
