Atlanta, Ga.--The NC State men's and women's swimming/diving squads earned a split against conference foe Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon in Atlanta. The Wolfpack women defeated the Lady Jackets 138-102, while the men took the loss 146.5-89.5. This is the first season the Georgia Tech women have fielded a team in the sport. The Wolfpack women now stand 4-2 on the season (3-1 ACC), while the men fall to 3-3 overall (2-2 ACC).
Wolfpack junior Erin Bailey captured both the 1 and 3-meter diving competitions again, registering a 251.62 on the 1-meter board and a 300.15 in the 3-meter competition.
Caroline Curran led a group of four Wolfpack swimmers to the victory in the 1650 freestyle, taking the race in 17:23.89. She was followed by Mandy Horn (17:36.08), Allison Marks (17:40.99) and Abigail Lewis (17:42.5).
Katie Sheridan picked up the next victory for NC State in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:55.04. Sheridan finished just ahead of Andrea Hastings in second (1:56.13) and Kathleen Tonini (1:56.55)
Erica Newell took the win in the 100 backstroke for the women, posting a mark of 58.30. Her win came just one event before Tonini's victory in the 500 freestyle (5:05.84). Tonini's time was just enough to nip Sheridan (2nd, 5:08.66).
The final victory of the afternoon came courtesy of the 400 freestyle relay squad, which consisted of Catherine Parks, Lindsay Holman, Elizabeth Herron and Horn.
On the men's side, Peter Pessagno, Chris Swank and Jared Bench all headed back to Raleigh victorious on the afternoon.
Pessagno blistered the field in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:27.76, over six full seconds ahead of second-place finisher Eduardo Oliver (9:34.08) of Georgia Tech.
Swank earned the win in the eighth event of the afternoon, the 50 freestyle. His time of 21.32 was just enough to edge Mike Comer of Georgia Tech (21.49) and the Wolfpack's Kevin Devine (21.79).
Freshman Jared Bench secured the Wolfpack's third and final victory in the 3-meter diving competition, by scoring a 305.55 in the event.
