Sophomore quarterback Philip Rivers threw for 330 yards and five touchdowns Saturday afternoon, as the Wolfpack scrimmaged for over two hours at Carter-Finley Stadium. Rivers threw touchdowns to five different receivers, connecting on 21 of his 27 pass attempts with no interceptions.
Only one of those touchdowns (a 13-yarder to Troy Graham) came in the first half, however, as the defense dominated the opening frame of the workout. The second half was all offense, as Rivers connected for scores with Bryan Peterson (17 yards), Dovonte Edwards (27 yards), Joe Gray (56 yards) and Andy Vanderveer (13 yards). Olin Hannum led the second-team offense to a score, when he ran for a 41-yard touchdown on a fake field goal.
Terrence Holt blocked a field goal for the second straight week, while roverback Julius Patterson pulled down three interceptions. Backup defensive end Shawn Price had three sacks for a loss of 28 yards. Senior tailback Ray Robinson rushed for 41 yards, and gained another 76 yards on four receptions. Peterson was the leading receiver with eight grabs for 89 yards.
"It was definitely two different halves," said head coach Chuck Amato following the workout. "We had total domination by the defense in the first half, and total domination by the offense in the second half. The first and second string offense dominated in third down situations and they dominated on the goalline."
"We caught the ball a little better, but because we've got so many young people, we're just inconsistent. Our tackling is not where it needs to be."
Offensive tackle Scott Kooistra did not practice, as he is out with a sprained ankle. Tailback Carlos Doggett had surgery Saturday morning to insert a screw in his fifth metatarsal (foot), while Andy Bertrand suffered an AC sprain during the scrimmage. Brian Jamison, who has been missing time with a sprained foot, should return early next week.
