Well, the only stats I can post tonight are the number of lightning strikes per minute. We started the scrimmage about 5:20 with the number-one offense going against the number-two defense. Five passes later (Philip completed four of them, one of which was a 44-yard touchdown strike to Willie Wright), another kind of strike sent the players scurrying back to the lockerrooms. An hour and a half later, the lightning was still popping and the rain was still pouring, so we decided to do it again tomorrow.
Coach Amato really hates practice on Sunday - we've never done it since he's been here, but because our two-a-days are so limited this year, we've got to get this scrimmage in. The team will go to church together tomorrow morning and then come back out to try again tomorrow afternoon. I'm afraid the forecast doesn't look too promising, but hopefully we'll get it in.
The team did have a kicking scrimmage this morning - working on all phases of special teams. This afternoon, a lot of jokes were told under the fieldhouse eaves before the coaches and officials decided to call it a day.
A few hearty souls (parents, radio announcers Tony Haynes and Gary Hahn, and my loyal staff Brian Reinhardt, Jason Corriher and Pat Norris) waited until the bitter end, so they deserve major props.
And I've also been told to print a retraction from yesterday. Smoke Hubert told me that when the coaches DID review the film from yesterday morning's workout, the touchdown that was not a touchdown really was a touchdown. But...I refuse to retract my earlier statement!
Well, so much for a day off. I guess I'm glad we're scrimmaging tomorrow or I wouldn't have anything to write in this diary!
