Philip Rivers, who shattered a number of school passing records in his freshman season a year ago, has been listed as an early candidate for the Davey O'Brien Award, given each year to the top quarterback in college football.
A national advisory committee of writers and commentators will select eight semifinalists in early November. The committee will then choose a winner and two runners up later that month.
The award will be presented Dec. 6 during ESPN's College Football Awards Show in Orlando, Fla.
The Davey O'Brien Award honors the late All-American and Heisman Trophy winner who led Texas Christian to the 1938 national championship.
Named the 2000 ACC Rookie of the Year, Rivers led the Pack to an 8-4 season that included a stunning comeback victory over Minnesota in the MicronPC.com Bowl. He set a total of seven school records last season, including marks for completions (237), passing attempts (441), touchdown responsibility (27), and touchdown passes (25).
