Nate McMillan is one of the most popular figures in the history of the Seattle Supersonics organization. Now the club is saying thank you. The former NC State guard, who replaced Paul Westphal as the Sonics' head coach last November 27th, has been rewarded with a four-year contract extension worth $10.8 million.
"Nate's our guy," club president Wally Walker told the Seattle Times. "We thought: 'Well, why are we waiting?'"
McMillan, who at 36 is the youngest coach in the NBA, has guided the Sonics to a 33-25 record since taking over. Seattle has moved to within four and a half games of Minnesota for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference by winning eight of its last nine games.
"The Sonics are my home," he said. "I feel good about the future, and I am very happy to know that I'll have a chance to prove myself here."
McMillan's No. 10 jersey was retired last year following a stellar playing career with the Supersonics. McMillan played at NC State in 1985 and 86 after transferring from Chowan College.
