Gymnastics Finishes Third in Hearts Invite

RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 9, 2001) -- The NC State women's gymnastics team placed third with a score of 195.150 at the annual Hearts Invitational held Friday night at Reynolds Coliseum. No. 20 Iowa took first place with a team score of 196.125, and No. 23 Kent State placed second with a score of 195.550. Rounding out the field was North Carolina in fourth place (193.025) and William & Mary in fifth (190.700).
NC State continued its season-long success on beam, an event NC State currently ranks seventh nationally. The Pack swept the top three spots, with first place honors going to senior Monica Berry. Berry, who ranks fifth in the nation, scored a 9.925 to win her third title of the season. Fellow senior Sara Dolan tied a career-best with a 9.9 to finish second, while junior Kelli Brown also tied a career-high with a 9.875 to place third. In addition, Kara Charles took sixth (9.85) and Laura Jazab placed eighth (9.825) to give the Pack a team total of 49.375, a mark that ranks fourth in school history.
Charles also nabbed a piece of the bars title by scoring a season-best 9.9. On floor, Brown scored a second place finish with a 9.9, while sophomore Adina Stock was seventh with a 9.825. Those tow teamed up to give the Pack its top two finishers on vault, with Stock placing second (9.8) and Brown fourth (9.775).
Iowa's Stephanie Gran help the Hawkeyes secure first place by scoring a perfect 10.0 on vault. Gran won the all-around with a score of 39.300, and also tied for third on beam and was fifth on floor. Teammate Alexis Madey took top honors on floor with a score of 9.925, and placed second in the all-around (39.250).
NC State will return to action next Saturday night, when the Pack hosts Air Force, North Carolina and Radford. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m .
