Wolfpack Wrestling Rolls On, Whips Appalachian State 29-12

RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 3, 2001) -- Paced by pins from Ryan McCallum and Scott Garren, and major decisions from Dustin Kawa and Zach Breitenbach, NC State's wrestling team won its fifth straight dual match in a row Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum, defeating Appalachian State 29-12.

NC State, which has won nine of its last 11 dual matches, won seven of the first eight matches to improve to 9-6 on the season. Appalachian State fell to 4-4 with the loss.

George Cintron (16-6) got the Wolfpack off to a quick start with a 5-3 decision over the Mountaineers' Rich Caisse (18-8) at 125 pounds. The win was Cintron's sixth in a row. McCallum (9-8) then scored his fall with a quick move coming off a reversal, pinning Travis Drake (18-8) at the 2:34 mark in the 133-pound match to give NC State a 9-0 team lead.

Jeremy Hart (4-2) got three points back for Appalachian State with a 6-0 win over Oraefo Brown (6-8) at 141, but the Wolfpack won the next four matches, one by fall and one by major decision, to wrap up the team victory.

Tommy Davis (10-2) scored an easy 7-1 decision over Davey Blake (1-2 / 5-5 overall) at 149 pounds, and Pierre Pryor (16-3) took a 7-3 decision over P.J. Boccia (15-9) at 157 to extend NC State's team lead to 15-3. Pryor, who won his 11th match in a row, trailed 3-1 late in the second period, but got a takedown at the end of the period, and then began the third in the down position, got a quick escape and immediately took Boccia down to complete a five-point turnaround.

Garren (18-7), ranked 18th nationally, made the team score 21-3 with a fall over Appalachian State's J.D. Kirby at the 1:44 mark at 165, and Kawa (12-9) clinched the team victory with a 15-5 major decision over Kyle Spencer (8-10) at 174.

The Mountaineers won two of the final three bouts after the issue was decided. Sean McIntosh (4-4 / 11-7 overall) took a 7-6 sudden-death decision over the Wolfpack's Jon Godwin (1-2 / 4-3) at 184. NC State's Zach Breitenbach (20-4), ranked No. 9 nationally at 197, then extended his career-best winning streak to 11 matches with a 10-1 major decision over Geoff McIntosh (4-3). Appalachian State heavyweight Danny Misenheimer (4-7) pinned David DeBinder (2-5) at 6:17 in the final bout of the afternoon.
