The match, the regular-season finale for NC State, proved to be a quality tune-up for next weekend's ACC Tournament, which will be held March 3 in Chapel Hill. The victory lifted the Pack to 4-1 in ACC action and clinched a tie for first place in the final conference standings. NC State is 12-7 overall and has won 12 dual matches in back-back-seasons for the first time in eight years. The loss dropped Duke to 0-4 in the ACC and 11-8 overall. The Blue Devils will face Campbell on Friday night in Durham in their regular-season wrap-up.
NC State won the first nine matches of the bout, starting with Zach Breitenbach's 3-2 victory over Daegan Smith (8-5) at 197. The win extended Breitenbach's current winning streak to 15 matches, a career high, and raises his season record to 24-4. Breitenbach, ranked eighth nationally, has not lost since a 10-5 defeat to Lehigh's Jon Trenge on January 7. Trenge, currently ranked No. 3 in the nation, is responsible for two of Breitenbach's four losses this season.
Fowler (5-4) was up next, and the Wolfpack's freshman heavyweight got a quick takedown of Duke's Levi Karnehm (5-15), and put the Blue Devil freshman on his back at 2:27 to give NC State a 9-0 team lead. Sophomore 125-pounder George Cintron (20-6) won his 15th straight match with a 7-3 win over Tommy Hoang (19-12) to make the team score 12-0. Cintron became the Wolfpack's third 20-match winner this season.
Freshman Ryan McCallum (11-9) picked up a 3-2 win over Sean Meakim (12-10) at 133, and redshirt-freshman Jonathan Williams (5-4) defeated Harry Clarke (15-15 / 17-17) at 141 to give NC State an 18-0 lead. Davis (13-3) added five points to the team score with a technical fall over Andre Solimon (5-5 / 18-19) at 149. The bout was stopped at 5:45 with Davis leading 21-6 and NC State leading the bout, 23-0.
The Wolfpack then recorded back-to-back pins at 157 and 165. Pryor (19-3) recorded his 18th career fall and his fifth of the season, pinning Josh Sheridan (17-13) at the 1:05 mark. Pryor now is tied for seventh all-time in the NC State record book for most career wins by fall. Davanzo (2-1 / 3-4), who moved into the starting lineup at 165 when Scott Garren went out for the season with a knee injury a week ago, pinned Tim Marcantonio (13-10) at 3:18 to give the Pack a 35-0 lead in the team scoring.
Redshirt-freshman Dustin Kawa (14-11) made it nine in a row for NC State with a 4-2 decision over Frank Cornerly (26-15) to make the team score 38-0. Duke averted the shutout in the final match of the evening when Tom Cass (29-5) beat Jason Gore (5-17), 7-2.
