George Mason Defeats N.C. State, 9-4

CHARLESTON, SC - Junior left-hander Travis Hardman hurled seven complete innins allowing four runs and struck out three to lead George Mason past N.C. State, 9-4, in Game #8 of The Citadel Invitational, in Riley Park.
George Mason (1-2) took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Jeff Palumbo laced a single to right-center. Stephen Johnson followed him with a double to rightfield. Palumbo then scored on a ground ball to the third baseman by Scott Yeager. Brad Santmyer then followed with a two-run home run to make the score, 4-0. George Mason added one more in the fourth, two in the seventh, and two in the ninth to finish the scoring with nine runs. Scott Yeager highlighted the seventh with a two-run home run.
N.C. State (3-3) struggled offensively against Hardman. The Wolfpack scored a run in the bottom of the fourth when Daniel Caldwell singled home Brian Wright. N.C. State added one more in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Corey Mattison took the loss for the Wolfpack going three innings and allowing four runs.
North Carolina State returns home next weekend to take on Rutgers in a three-game series at Doak Field starting at 3:00 on Friday.
