Wolfpack 800 Free Relay Team Qualifies For NCAA Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE,VA (Feb. 16, 2001) -- The NC State women completed their second day of competition at the ACC Swimming/Diving Championships in Charlottesville, VA.
North Carolina still leads the way in the team competition with 535 points, followed by Virginia (423), Clemson (353), Maryland (315), Florida State (270), NC State (223) and Duke (108).
Leading the way for the Wolfpack on this day was the 800 freestyle relay team of Mary Mittendorf, Katie Sheridan, Andrea Hastings and Mandy Horn. The group finished third overall in the event and made the "B" cut for the NCAA Championships by virtue of their time of 7:25.66. The 200 medley relay team of Annamaria Gazda, Natalie Jones, Dawn DeLuca and Hastings took sixth overall with a finishing time of 1:46.06.
The women would prove to have a busy day as Mittendorf posted a seventh overall finish in the 100 butterfly (56.15), followed by DeLuca in ninth (56.73), Shana Bullock in tenth (57.04) and Kim Whitaker in 24th (1:00.38).
Gazda finished in eighth position in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.82, followed by Sheridan (13th, 57.99) and Kathleen Tonini (18th, 59.52).
In the 200 freestyle, Horn took ninth overall (1:51.23), while Brandi Stergion took 22nd (1:58.72).
In the 100 breaststroke, Natalie Jones led the Wolfpack charge with an 11th-place finish with a mark of 1:05.01, followed by Karen Cone in 12th (1:05.03).
In the 400 IM, Emily Fess led the way for NC State with a 15th-place finish in 4:34.99. Sue Vogt also posted a 17th overall finish with a time of 4:39.66.
The competition will end Sunday evening.
